Having a good body posture during tabletop activities especially writing requires good body control of the trunk, legs, and arms. To acquire this, you have to work on muscle strength and endurance through physical activities like crawling, jumping, throwing and catching a ball, pulling and pushing objects and many more. But, did you know that you can also improve your muscles'
strength and endurance by positioning your body into different positions during activities? Here some suggestion of body position/posture during activities that you can practice with your child at home;
1: Standing
This position strengthens the shoulder and wrist
2: Laying
This position stabilize the head, trunk, and legs and strengthens the shoulder, elbow, and wrist
3: Laying down on the stomach
This position strengthens neck, shoulder, and elbow
4: Squatting
This position strengthens trunk and legs
5: Kneeling
This position stabilize the neck and hip and strengthen the shoulder and knee
6: 4-Point Crawling
This position strengthens neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and knee
What Activities I Can Do With My Child?
You can do as many activities that your child enjoys the most during leisure, study or even playtime. You can encourage your child to practice these positions throughout the day. Some suggestions for activities are:
Writing
Coloring
Drawing
Playing
Reading
Watching TV
REMEMBER, prolonged body position may cause fatigue. Thus, allow your child to switch position maximum after 5 minutes of each position.
